Family Information and Pricing
We know how important family memories are and one of our specialty’s is the family portrait. We are passionate with everything that goes along with it; planning the concept, helping with the clothing choices, and executing perfect lighting and composition. Getting your family together at one time isn’t easy, so don’t take chances. We are good at what we do and we are here to help out.
Where & When
Studio Portraits can be scheduled any time of day. We have several options for settings and colors from casual to formal. In studio portraits can be accomplished for groups of up to 30 people with some design exceptions.
On Location: By far our most popular sessions can offer the most pleasing scenery for family portraits and limitless possibilities from mountain scenery, county barns, soft grass savannahs, to the urban downtown look. These change by season but generally we like to schedule location sessions during the last hour of daylight. Ask about our current favorite locations because we keep discovering new ones!
Home Portraits can be personal and story-telling images. A home portrait can be created in the yard, with your house softly in the background, or inside relaxing in your favorite room. Most often, we schedule outdoor home portraits for late in the afternoon or evening.

Our shooting style and common questions:
We get this question almost every time when we do an extended family shoot, “Does this just include the group shot or can we have individual’s, family’s, and kids?” The answer is YES! Our shooting style is very laid back. We always, at the beginning of a family shoot, shoot the main family portrait first to make sure that is perfect. Then we break down to the individual family groups, starting with the families with the youngest children first. Our experience over the years has taught us to do this first. (You know how young ones are.) Then we will break the shoot down to the children/grandchildren and then shoot any other special requests that you may have.
“When will my images be ready to be seen?” We try to have all our images sorted, edited, retouched, and ready to be previewed within two weeks of your photo shoot. We will contact you and set up a viewing appointment to view the images and make any minor adjustments and requests. We do ask you to be prepared to make decisions at the time of your appointment, and if you need your significant other to help in the decision process that they be present. We have found that this makes the process faster and more streamlined and you are happier with your choices.
“Can I just buy the digital files?” Yes you can. Just be aware that we have the highest quality standards/ expectations of our in-house printed images, but we cannot guarantee the quality of any printed images outside of our studio control.
“What products do you offer, and do you do custom designs?” We offer several options of products listed below.
Good: Fine art prints-- All prints are textured and prints above the 8X10 size are mounted for quality and durability and ready to be framed.
Better: Stand-out prints-- All prints are textured and mounted on a stand-out block for a better presentation and a more modern look. No framing is needed; they are ready to be hung.
Best: Canvases-- Our most popular portrait presentation. Our canvases can be made in any size. We are not limited to a certain dimension unlike the standard sizes of the past. All are ready to be hung, and we are more than happy to design a custom grouping for you.
Other options available: custom designed books/albums, greeting cards, and custom designed colleges.
Retouching: Retouching enhancement is included at no additional charge on all images. We pay special attention to all your individual and retouch requests within reason.
What to Wear:
Some helpful advice about dressing for a Timeless Family Portrait:
Begin with Neutral Fabrics
Start with a solid (or lightly textured). Add a minimal splash of color and pattern with the children’s outfits or adult’s accessories (ie: a shirt or blouse under a jacket, a scarf, jewelry, etc).
Don’t Mix Whites and Darks
Unify the group with a “dark-on-dark” mix of clothing, (OR) a mix of “light-on-light” tones.
Do not mix dark and light tops and bottoms especially in larger groups. This can create a “cluttered” look. Ideally, no outfit should compete for attention with your family's beautiful faces.
Avoid Bold Patterns or Logos
Experience shows that strong patterns and stripes can date a portrait quickly. For a timeless and more artistic effort, employ solids and subtly textured fabrics.
To Slenderize
Dark clothing tends to slenderize. Longer sleeves are generally more flattering than short cap sleeves. Wearing the same tone on top and bottom tends to lengthen and slenderize your body visually.
Eye Glasses
People who wear their glasses all day often want to keep them on for their portrait. Glasses, however, can produce glare and reflections covering the eyes. This is not retouchable. Anti-reflective coating helps greatly to reduce the reflections. Otherwise we recommend borrowing a similar pair of empty frames from your optometrist or going without.
For a Natural Look
Layering with sweaters and jackets adds depth and dimension to your portrait. Layers can also allow you to move more naturally and look more comfortable. Outdoor portraits are best with “outdoor” casual outfits which allow you to sit on the ground if needed. Consider jean-style pants and long flowing skirts for this reason.
For a Formal Portrait
For a stunning formal portrait start with a blend of rich, understated colors. Add a little dark-on-dark pattern with accessories. Don’t be afraid to spice it up with a color splash, flattering necklines and jewelry. Layers of darker tones work well to simplify the overall look while adding depth.
Lay it All Out
Try laying out everyone’s clothing in the room where your portrait will live. Replace outfits and add accessories until you achieve a complimentary and exciting look for that room. After laying out your clothing choices, take a quick snapshot with your phone. This can be helpful when sharing information with other family members and when shopping for the rest of the family.
Finally… Bring Options
We highly recommend bringing extra clothing options for each member of your group. Often we find that changing a top or bottom at the last minute can greatly improve your portrait design.
