BEHIND THE LENS

My Journey in Photography

They say a small spark can ignite a roaring fire—and that’s exactly how my lifelong love affair with photography began. In 1982, I picked up a 35mm point-and-shoot film camera, grabbed a few rolls of film, strapped on a backpack, and ventured into the backcountry of Wyoming. That was the moment it all started.

Photography has always been more than just taking pictures for me. It’s about the connection, the emotion, and the joy I feel when capturing the world—whether it's people, landscapes, wildlife, or the mysteries and beauty that surround us. I started with film, learning everything I could from books, classes, fellow photographers, and professional organizations. I’ve lost track of how many thousands of images I’ve taken over the years, but the boxes of negatives and hard drives full of digital files speak for themselves. They say it takes 10,000 shots to make one great one—I think I may have finally gotten mine!

When I transitioned from film to digital in 2007, it opened up a whole new world of possibilities. Digital photography has allowed me to evolve faster, explore different styles, and even dive into artistic composites. I’m constantly learning, pushing my creativity, and challenging myself to see the world in new ways. I believe that if you stop pushing boundaries, you risk losing the ability to truly see the depth, complexity, and beauty in everything around you.

That same year, with the unwavering support of my wife—the love of my life—I took a leap of faith and turned my passion into a profession. The practice was over; it was time to go all in. With the encouragement of family, friends, peers, and incredible clients, I haven’t looked back since. In 2013, I was honored to receive my Idaho Fellowship of Photography, and in 2022, I achieved my Master of Photography. These milestones represent years of dedication, growth, and a relentless pursuit of excellence in my craft.

I love what I do, and I believe it shows. Life is good.
